From Goodreads Something strange is happening in Ellerton High. Phoenix is the fourth teenager to die within a year. His street fight stabbing follows the deaths of Jonas, Summer and Arizona in equally strange and sudden circumstances. Rumours of ghosts and strange happenings rip through the small community as it comes to terms with shock and loss.
Darina, Phoenix's grief-stricken girlfriend, is on the verge. She can't escape her intense heartache, or the impossible apparitions of those that are meant to be dead. And all the while the sound of beating wings echo inside her head…
And then one day Phoenix appears to Darina. He tells her that she must help Jonas - the first of the four to die - right the wrong linked with his death. Only with her help can Jonas finally rest in peace. Will love conquer death? And if it does, can Darina set it free?
Review by Jessica
BEAUTIFUL DEAD: JONAS, by Eden Maguire, hands you a love and grief struck teenage girl named Darina. Her boyfriend Phoenix dies in a fight and she is left with too many questions and no answers. I found it impossible to put this book down once I picked it up.
The very beginning of this book throws you a little by placing you in a scene that you don't quite understand because there is no background story to begin with but I tried to overlook it because the scene makes you want- no have to know more and as soon as you get through the one spot of confusion at first your hooked.
Darina is my favorite kind of character; determined, strong, and most of all brave. She has lost the one person in the world she loved most and shes lost without him. He's gone forever...right? That's when she discovers the Beautiful Dead. Four of them. They happen to be the same four kids that died in the small town of Ellerton. Four kids in one year dead. Very odd.
She has to accept that these Beautiful Dead creatures are real, and if she wants to stay involved with them then she must help them. That includes seeing her Beautiful Dead boyfriend. It's a no-brainer for her. Each Beautiful Dead has exactly one year before they are gone forever, business taken care of or not. She must race the clock that seems to tick faster and faster everyday so she can save Beautiful Dead Jonas from slipping into the void, with his death, the first of the four, still a mystery.
This book has it all. Love, mystery, tragedy, feel good moments and the annoying character that has complete control over every situation. I suggest you make yourself comfy in bed, on the couch or wherever your reading spot is and just read. You will not be disappointed. Eden Maguire most certainly knows how to capture a voice.
